Figuring out your next chapter
Most people aren't born knowing exactly what they want to do and how they'll do it. For most people, life looks like a lot like this:
When I was a kid in school, I loved writing and I really struggled in math class. So I started taking more writing classes, which is how I ended up meeting that teacher who told me about that summer program. I met my best friend at that summer program. The only reason I went to the college I went to was because my best friend was going. Because I went to that school, I met that person who told me about that internship, which is what led me to my first job, which is why I was so stressed I started taking yoga after work, which is why I eventually got certified to teach yoga, which is why I started leading workshops, which is why, ultimately I learned that… And that's how I ended up where I am.
The path is windy, twisty, turny – and when it comes to figuring out what you want to do, there's not one decision in that whole journey that's any more important than any other decision. If you would've skipped breakfast on your first day of the eighth grade and shown up to English class hangry, your entire life trajectory might be different.
No single decision is more important than another. The faster you make decisions, the faster you'll start taking action, and the faster you'll gain clarity.
Deciding what you want to do next will never just be one decision you make on one day. Your work will be in a near constant state of evolution from this moment until the moment you stop working and creating. You will always be gaining more clarity. You will always be evolving. If you're breathing, thinking, and talking – you are not stuck. You are in the lifelong process of discovering.
I teach my clients a process so they can jump from “I'm just starting to have a vague idea of what I want to do” to “oh my god, I'm actually doing it" …faster. My clients are taking the ideas in their heads and turning them into businesses, youth programs, books, podcasts, and new careers – quickly. This is a process that happens naturally. We use tools to combat self-doubt and indecision, so you figure it out faster.
My clients can do this. Which means you can do this, too.
Remember: When you're figuring out what you want to do, no single decision is more important than any another. The faster you make decisions, the faster you'll start taking action, and the faster you'll gain clarity. Clarity is not something we have until we're looking back at our lives and the happy coincidences that led us to where we are.
